Planters to Match the Environment
The student center at University of California at San Diego has undergone a major renovation in recent years, remodeling existing structures and adding new ones. One of the premier public universities in the nation, the college campus was built in the 1960s and 1970's in a eucalyptus grove. Naturally, the design team wanted to preserve and even enhance the rich wooded look inspired by the lightly forested setting. So, they sought planters that would convey an eco-friendly look and feel to match.
The team turned to the Public Architecture and Planning department and decided to go for a "tree house" motif that was warm, inviting and natural. With that in mind, an existing concrete wall got the"green treatment" by adding our custom redwood planters. With anadded twist, each planter was suspended by a unique bracket system. Ultimately, the wood planter boxes design was honored by the American Institute of Architects San Diego Chapter.
Enduring and Adaptable Wooden Planters
With their deep well and tapered sides surrounded by 3 galvanized steel bands, our wooden planters were so well received at UCSD we now offer them to everyone. Made from kiln dried Sequoia redwood, these wood flower boxes are comprised of rugged redwood planks that naturally resist sunlight, moisture, and insects. Their sturdy quality and handsome good looks have found a home in many other university campuses, commercial buildings, estate homes and civic buildings.
Each sustainably-sourced redwood planter is sold raw, unfinished, but they can also be ordered stained or painted to meet your custom needs. Add standard or watertight fiberglass planter liners to wooden outdoor planters to extend the life of this organic material. Since all aspects of these rectangular planters can be customized, add self-watering reservoirs to keep flowers and foliage hydrated up to 2 weeks.
