Built-In Convenience

When you choose a self-watering window box, simply select the option to add a water reservoir during checkout. We’ll include the correct number and length of reservoirs to pair perfectly with your chosen box. Don’t worry—a reservoir doesn’t have to span the full box length. Our specially engineered design efficiently waters the soil within a 6–8" radius, keeping nearby plant roots hydrated and thriving.

Effortless Installation

Creating a self-watering system in a window box or planter is simple and takes just minutes:

  1. Add a layer of small pebbles at the bottom of your window box to support drainage.
  2. If your box has drainage holes, lay down a piece of filter fabric to keep soil in place.
  3. Place the reservoir on top of the gravel layer and insert the fill tube.
  4. Add high-quality potting soil, ensuring the fill tube remains above the soil surface.
  5. Plant your flowers and top-water initially to help roots reach the moisture source.
  6. Fill the reservoir through the tube. Once established, plant roots will self-regulate water intake, drawing exactly what they need, when they need it.

See our installation guides for more information on preparing your window boxes.

FAQs

How does a self-watering window box system work?

A water reservoir sits within the planting area and delivers moisture upward through the soil as plants need it, so roots self-regulate intake and stay consistently hydrated. See our installation guides for full setup instructions.

Which window boxes are compatible with the water reservoirs?

Our water reservoirs are designed to work with a wide range of our window box styles, and we'll include the correct number and length at checkout when you select the self-watering option. Browse our full selection of compatible window boxes to find your match.

Does a reservoir need to span the full length of the window box?

No. Each reservoir delivers moisture to the soil within a 6–8" radius, so multiple smaller units can work together across a longer box. This design ensures even coverage without requiring a single full-length reservoir.

How often do I need to refill the reservoir?

Refill frequency varies by plant type, box size, and weather conditions, but most gardeners find every one to two weeks sufficient once plants are established.

What plants grow best in self-watering window boxes?

Trailing flowers like petunias, lobelia, and bacopa thrive with consistent moisture, as do herbs such as mint, basil, and thyme — making these systems ideal for ornamental and edible displays alike. For year-round color with no replanting, our artificial flowering plants also work beautifully across our window box styles.

Do I need a liner with my self-watering window box?

We recommend adding a liner to keep soil in place and support healthy drainage alongside the reservoir. Brackets and bolts are also available to complete your installation securely.
